Great senior designers today are a dying breed

The problems in UX aren’t caused by juniors trying to break into the industry but rather by seniors’ incompetence.

Inflated expectations

So many transitioning boot camp graduates come out of their programs thinking their certificates entitle them to employment.

Bootcamp grads think they know better because the boot camps back them up

The most annoying thing that stopped my network from engaging with the community was boot camp grads questioning the experiences of senior professionals against their boot camp teachings.

It’s like telling your doctor his diagnosis is wrong because you checked WebMD before coming in for a consultation.

Seniors who think they know everything

We have seen designers who claim to have over 20 years of experience but cannot design. They can’t do proper interface design, they can’t work fast, and they can’t produce modern UX. What were you doing in the decades you’ve been in the industry?

Why haven’t you retired or pivoted yet if you’re that good?

How these toxic behaviors and unhealthy attitudes impact us

Chances are, you’ve already been affected by these groups unknowingly.

Successful designers don’t just stay in UX or product or software. They design everything and build their practice around a holistic mentality.

I don’t understand how some people can preach about holistic UX / CX when they won’t even bother to learn visual (or other) design skills just to be employable.

We are to blame for our own failures. Our practice is no longer holistic, and we only focus on our own little communities and our selfish goals instead of looking out to learn from other disciplines to further the practice.
